From the Trading Desk
The Turtle Trading System is famous for its returns, but its real lesson is structural: it answered every decision a trader must make. Most systems answer one.
Ask what made the Turtles legendary and people say trend following, or the story of novices trained into traders. The durable lesson is simpler: theirs was a complete trading system. Every decision required for successful trading had an answer written down in advance. There are six.
Traders want liquid markets that trend well, and more than one of them: confine yourself to a single market and you shrink your chance of catching a trend when it comes. Deciding the universe you trade is a system decision, not a mood.
The most important component, and the one most traders handle worst. Sizing controls both diversification and risk, and it is the bridge between your system and your money management. The Turtles sized by volatility; the principle is that the method is written down at all.
The part everyone obsesses over, and in a complete system, the most mechanical: when market conditions match the definition, the signal fires. No definition, no trade.
Long-term survival means cutting losses, and the non-negotiable detail is when the stop is decided: before entry, always. A stop chosen mid-trade is not risk management, it is bargaining.
The forgotten component. Winning positions need predefined exits just as losing ones do; a system that cannot tell you when to take profit is delegating that decision to greed.
Once the signal fires, how do you actually work the order? In small accounts this seems trivial; as size grows, execution and market impact become real system components of their own.
Score your own approach against the six. Most self-described systems are an entry signal with ambitions. If yours answers all six, the next step is proving the whole package works together across history, which is exactly what rigorous backtesting in a platform like MetaStock is for. Complete, then tested, then traded: that order made the Turtles.
