System Requirements
Short version: any reasonably current Windows PC runs MetaStock 20 comfortably. Macs need one extra step. Here are the practical requirements.
| Component | Practical requirement |
|---|---|
| Operating system | 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11 |
| Processor | Any modern multi-core CPU; faster helps large scans and backtests |
| Memory | 8 GB minimum; 16 GB is the comfortable spec, especially with XENITH open |
| Storage | A few GB for the software plus room for local history; an SSD makes everything feel faster |
| Internet | Reliable broadband; real-time data is only as good as the connection carrying it |
| Displays | Runs fine on one screen; traders who add a second rarely go back |
MetaStock publishes the definitive current requirements during trial signup; confirm there if your machine is borderline. The specs above reflect the practical experience, which is what actually matters.
MetaStock is Windows software with no native Mac version. Mac users run it three ways: Parallels Desktop (the smoothest option on modern Macs and what most of my Mac-based students used), a Windows virtual machine via VMware or UTM, or a spare Windows PC dedicated to trading, which has the side benefit of separating trading from everything else.
It works well once set up, but be honest about the friction: if you are Mac-committed and VM-averse, weigh a browser-based platform instead; the TradingView comparison is the place to start.
The 30-day trial is also a hardware test: install it on the machine you intend to use and run your biggest realistic workload, a full-market exploration or a long backtest, in week one. Your own PC's performance is the only benchmark that counts.
Install the trial and know for certain in half an hour.
